👂What’s new

Respect… mah… horologaaaa!

I own two Unimatic watches. They’re fine - decent quality, interesting design, great prices. They have interesting collabs (the Spongebob one in particular). But they’re just that. Fine.

South Park, on the other hand, is a work of genius. The best piece of media ever produced. A cartoon that transcended its humor and is now one of the most important cultural moments of our generation.

Naturally, slap Cartman onto an Unimatic watch, and this instantly becomes the best watch released this year. Only 100 pieces, so I won’t go on since they’re all already sold out. Just hop on over to Unimatic and admire the beauty.

I get why people like Hamilton watches. It’s not an appeal I see, but I understand it. Problem is, every watch can be interesting if it’s original. Hamilton, obviously, doesn’t agree. That’s why they have a new line the Hamilton Jazzmaster Performer.

There’s a bunch of them, click on the link to see all the options. The issue is with the Chrono. Put your finger over the pushers and it’s so close to a Daytona that Pagani Design would say: “Hey bro, that’s a bit too much”.

Just kidding. It’s not hyper-minimalist. Or maybe it is? I think Jacob of Jacob & Co. is a great guy. And they make incredibly complicated and intricate watches. But there’s no other way to say it: they’re butt ugly.

However, it looks like Jacob slipped up when making their new watch and accidentally didn’t throw everything and the kitchen sink at it. Yes, it’s still horrendous, but it’s also very understated 😭 The new Jacob '& Co. is called the Casino Tourbillon, only… it hides the flying tourbillon in the back, behind the dial. What replaces it? A working roulette wheel. It’s gimmicky, sure. But it’s also cool. And subtle. Yours for $280,000 before tax.

IWC has a watch coming out in April. It’s called the IWC Portofino Complete Calendar and it’s supposed to be a cheap knockoff of their completley unimaginative Perpetual Calendar. The date on the Complete Calendar will have to be adjusted five times a year, but that’s what you get when you can’t afford a Perpetual. To nobody’s surprise, the Complete Calendar, like the rest of the IWC range, is also boring and costs some money to own. Click the link id you’re really interested.

⚙️Watch Worthy

A look at an off beat, less known watch you might actually like

While Omega and Rolex are throwing their hunks of metal down the Mariana Trench, small watchmakers are playing with other shapes. While I dislike PVD, I have to say this Ralf Tech looks amazing.

⏲️Wait a minute

A bunch of links that might or might not have something to do with watches. One thing’s for sure - they’re interesting

  • When one man talks about Speedmasters, others are quiet and listen. That man is Robert-Jan Broer, the founder of Fratello watches. And he just put out a guide to Speedmasters. Go read it, now.

  • Monochrome has some ideas what we can expect from Rolex this year. While it’s almost certain they will introduce a new Daytona, a full gold Explorer… now that would be amazing!

  • There are some very interesting watch auctions coming up.

  • Time and Tide has an intriguing writeup about THE Plus, a horribly named movement that might just take over as the leading movement provider to microbrands

  • Today’s links were all watch themed, so here’s one that isn’t - have you heard about ‘Team Jorge’? They’re a covert Israeli group of hackers who sway elections, hack phones of the rich and powerful and who were recently uncovered by investigative journalists.
